Water is used in nearly all areas of the industry. Within only 50 years the worldwide water withdrawal by the industry has increased from 200km³ in 1950 on 800 km³ in 2000, which is about 20 percent. In the European-wide comparison the industry uses even 52 percent of the water. Water pollution and water shortage will be a menace of the water supply for the local authority districts, the ecological systems and also for the industry in the future.
